Lex Luthor Drop of Doom

Post by thom25 on 2012-01-05, 09:51

Six Flags Magic Mountain has always been the premier West Coast park for extreme thrills and 2012 will certainly no disappoint with Lex Luthor, given it's the world's tallest drop tower at 400 feet.

The park has posted this Official Lex Luthor video

I can't wait to check this ride out - Any updates on the construction progress?

From Robert Thomas. Well here is a smaller update then I had planned, I like a dumb ass didn't bring fresh batteries for my camera and it died. I used my cell to snap up a few pics before it too died Mad Don't worry there isn't much going on to see yet I do have a season pass and will provide more updates in the future as construction progress.

ok first off here some log jammer clearing they've made up all the way up to the tunnel and all the monorail track has been removed up to the tunnel through the mountain.

On Lex Luther nothing is really going beside the gutter of some old shops that will be used as part of the que. No ride parts are anywhere I could see and they have walls up all around the site making it very hard to see into the site.

I did take a quick peek behind one of the wall but didn't get a very good shot, but what I could see was nothing major was going on beside just some work truck on site

Here's a couple shots of Thrill Shots area since it's been removed

Here's a video of the log jammer site posted by The Coaster Guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ERqFNUUH47c#!

Yeah, it was the oldest of the two that they had. Log Jammer was more of a longer version similar to Dutch Wonderland's log flume, while Jet Stream, the park's other flume is an Arrow Hydroflume similar to Hershey's Coal Cracker. Of course, Jet Stream is the only remaining flume now that this one has been removed (not if you include the park's Chute-the-Chutes "Tidal Wave" attraction).

You guys are welcome, but keep this in mind, S:EFK is already a 415 ft. coaster, so I do't think they need a strata.... an Itamin Blitz Terrain coaster would be a PERFECT fit!

That is an interesting idea, since B&M is working on a launch system, so who knows. Regarding S:EFK, there already has been a ton of debate weather it is a real coaster, and even if it is, it rarely makes it to the top, so I'm not sure I'd call it a strata. Irregardless, 2013 is looking to be a VERY good year between Southern CA and Ohio - Can not wait !

Can't see a giga going in there unless they extend it out to intertwine more with the hillside or other rides. I think a Wingrider would work perfectly.

They should do an Intamin Blitz like I've said.... the space is too small of a giga, MM has too many inversion coasters, and IMO a wing rider would be a down grade of X2! It's X2 without rotating seats! Don't get me wrong I think they look epic, but a launch coaster is much more appropriate, and I see a blitz coaster working!

Well it was stated at WCB during the Q&A session at SFMM the the 2013 coaster would be Huge and Record Breaking and would not be an Aquatrax. cheers

Also to back this HUGE claim up here's a pic I got from Westcoaster.net that shows the back side of the mountain also being cleared. This clearing is on the opposite side of the mountain from the log jammer site and you can see the tunnel that goes through the mountain on the right side in this pic.

See that's the thing I'm really finding hard to believe that SF inc. is ready to drop the 50+ million on a Stratacoaster. To be Record Breaking it would have to top KK, if their going for height. If they're going for speed then it would have to top Formula Rossa at 150mph and you see how huge that coaster is to handle the speed with trims.

Imo if they are claiming it will be huge and record breaking the cheapest way to do that would be to go lift based meaning Gigacoaster. I can see Six Flags spending 25+ on a Giga, I can not see them at all spending 50+ on the other anytime soon imo.

I agree, this picture from Westcoaster surprised me. This coaster will be like Tatsu I guess. I never knew this tunnel went that far so that does allow possibility for a giga.
Did anyone else read the SFMM article by Westcoaster? They really bashed SFMM.... even though I like Knott's better and agreed Knott's is better, Six Flags is really fun just for the thrills. They were majorly criticizing how dirty it was, but a lot is going on in the park right now. IMO, this is the most production possibly in the decade

The dude who posted that negative review of SFMM hasn't been to SFMM in years nor did he go to WCB. It's one thing to come up with a negative review if you experienced it with your own eyes, but to come up with that review and he has not even stepped foot in the park in a while is just rude and over the top.

Put it this way Robb and Jim Disney has been friends for years well after that review Jim did, Robb has even said he wants nothing to do with that guy nor does he want WCB or his site associated with Westcoaster at all anymore. Now I usually don't agree with Robb but this time I 100% agree with him.

Just think if All American Thrills had put on an event at Hershey and then someone that didn't even participate writes up a scathing report about the park and event. You can best believe that wouldn't leave the best impression with Hershey and they probably wouldn't even want to waste their time putting on another event if they are just going to be bashed.

He's over there crying about it and how it's his site he should have the right to his opinion which he does, he just doesn't have the right to slander and make up negative non-sense lol.

Thanks for the link. I'm reading it now, so far not too bad, but is taking on a mean tone. And I removed the name filters, I forgot those were still on there. Smile
Thanks again for the link. I'll post my insight once i'm all done reading it(or to the point I'm sick of reading it, depending how mean it gets)

Post by Robjob on 2012-02-25, 18:26

Trust me It's a completely different report now, it's still has a mean tone but the first one was just like WTF are you serious!!! If you noticed a lot of the pictures don't have captions anymore, he removed them at the request of the Park. that shows you how bad they were and the majority of them didn't even have to do with the picture they were just insane random negative rants lol. Anyways I'm glad he was asked to remove them b/c no site owner should behave that way, yet call themselves an enthusiast and want to take part in events being held at the park their trashing.

Anyways back on to this topic Lex Luther they are current moving the S:EFK stair case over 8 inches to accommodate Lex. Once this is done we should see major construction kick in to high gear. The old shops that have been gutted will be used for the Que and should have a pretty detailed pre-show. Another interesting thing about Lex is he will not be bolted or welded on to the S:EFK structure, They will be using these giant Clamps to hold the structures together. Also they will be using a single winch system, meaning both sides will have to be dispatched together but can drop independently.

More clues?!

Post by galindoverhere on 2012-02-25, 21:41

Okay guys, a TPR user posted this on their SFMM discussion thread, so these may be some other possible clues of what could be coming in 2013 (Note: These questions were supposedly asked during WCB's Q&A presentation) :

We were also talking with him while Apocalypse was broken down (they were having a computer issue - it was saying the train was going too fast when entering the station), and boarded shortly after he started talking about the new ride, so I missed some of what he said (I didn't hear much about the actual layout, using the tunnel, or where he said it would have a length record). Anyways, what I heard from him was that it was still in the design phase, but would be in the 6000 ft length range, would have three magnetic launches, and would claim the record for the world's tallest loop. After hearing what Tim and Neal had to say on the subject, it all seemed pretty plausible (huge = long length, record breaking = giant loop and/or reclaiming coaster record, and both made a point of mentioning that the design was still in progress). Tim and Neal also mentioned that they were clearing out monorail track from the tunnel, which would fit with the ride using that feature.

Anyways, from what I heard it sounded like Cheetah Hunt, but longer, faster, and with a loop. And since the current record for loop height is Superman: Krypton Coaster at SFFT (145 ft tall @ 70 mph), it seems like a given that it'd need to reach at least 70 mph (10 mph faster than CHunt). A giant loop would also make a nice tribute to Revolution, Viper, and Riddler's (all former record holders). Anyways, I've been excited for whatever they have in store, but if what I heard last weekend turns out to be true, I think that excitement will be well justified.

Re: Lex Luthor Drop of Doom

Post by Robjob on 2012-02-25, 22:44

First that was not posted by TPR but by a tpr user big difference imo. Second I'm sick of the people on that site saying any coaster without a loop the GP will think it's Goliath, yet I guess another loop added to 30+ the park already has isn't just another loop b/c this one will be bigger...idiots! Cedar Fair has pulled off the Hyper and the Giga combo just fine yet when it comes to SFMM doing it according most users on that site it's just ludicrous.

One thing that doesn't sound right about that story is that it's still in the design phase, unless it's not coming until 2014. I just can't see a record breaking ride 6000+ feet in length with record breaking elements still being in the design phase and the ride is suppose to be opening in 2013.

Well, that's an interesting tidbit. It would be an Intamin coaster I would assume.

Maybe we should be discussing this on the 2013-2014 What's in Store thread?

Yes we should, cuz I want to participate in more threads! Very Happy
Yeah and replying to before Westcoaster updated the article, I was pretty upset because I go to SFMM about 5 times a year, and even though it isn't the cleanest, the park staff is nice, and to rip the whole staff cuz of one guy that wsn't a confirmed event is uncalled for. Like I said, when he was saying how sloppy it was, he was taking pictures of construction/deconstuction! Yeah it's gonna be sloppy! :p

Getting back to Lex, I'm not sure my next visit so we'll stick to thecoasterguy.com for updates

I agree Brandon, we should stick to Lex here and discuss 2013 on that other thread. Good call keeping each thread focused.

Knottsnetwork, I know you'll be able to get good updates here at All American Thrills for both projects - so please don't forget this site for the latest news. Did you notice that after 2 months, this site now has 293 registered users as of today? Pretty impressive imho. cheers

I used to visit West Coaster regularly for past coaster construction and very surprised at Jim's post. I didn't see the original post, but it certainly wasn't professional if MM had to ask him for a different language. Is Jim related to the Disney family?

So back to Lex, why are they clamping and not bolting the ride? Would drilling into the existing structure compromise it's integrity? I'm also surprised that both sides will go up together but down independently. IS this another example of SF being penny wise and dollar foolish? I'm sure independent operation is cheaper, but it also means if one side fails, both do. Too bad one side doesn't launch up instead of both being pulled up.

I for one can't wait to see this bad boy start construction and will be on this site regularly for all my construction updates. Very Happy

^^Wow thats awesome, congrats All American Thrills!
Honestly, the whole putting Lex on the side of Superman to me seems ghetto. Especially the clamps.... like seriously? But I guess this is smart because Superman is tall, but not extraordinarily thick. I know they have done this on the Tower of Terror in Australia, but IMO MM should have just built another structure.....
from the recent death on the Intamin free fall, to how sketchy this ride is looking, I'm seriously considering not riding it....

I agree my first thought was it was kinda ghetto, but it makes perfect sense to get another 400 foot ride for short money. Have they said how much Lex is going to cost?

So back to Lex, why are they clamping and not bolting the ride? Would drilling into the existing structure compromise it's integrity?

I'm thinking that's exactly why, if you ever seen the tower during/after one or both of the trains/cars go up and down it sways like crazy. I'm thinking the clamps instead of the bolting/ welding will give both structures the flexibility needed to keep both standing.

I also think single winch is because of the weight, I hear it will weight 6 tons added to the top of the tower, a double winch system would have probably been to much weight and made both rides unstable.

I'm also trying to put another trip together hopefully for Saturday, I've heard parts may have started showing up, report of steel I-beams and other parts showing up behind Apocalypse, this is also where they stored Green lantern. If I can't get an update this week end hopefully the Coasterguy will have one.
