I thought it was mentioned somewhere that they expected to have Park Blvd moved by 2014 or 15. It'll be interesting to see what they develop on the thirty-some acres that they had planned to expand on.

I'd say some larger flats, kiddie rides, and maybe a large coaster. But lots of food and shops and stuff too. I think this expansion will be GREAT for such a great park. I know that space will be used wisely!

Re: Hersheypark Old Golf Course Expansion Plan

This could probably be one of the reasons why Skyrush wasn't brought the whole way down to the road. They probably plan on utilizing the space of the former Creekside Catering as a way to bring guests out onto the old golf course. Hopefully maybe they'll build a much larger and better rapids ride along with possibly the next new coaster out on this land.

What are anyone's thoughts on the possible relocation of Hersheypark Stadium? I heard through the grapevine that there was talk about building a larger sports/concert venue behind the Giant Center and removing the existing stadium altogether (I don't know how true this is anymore but like I said, it's what's been talked about and what I heard so take it with a grain of salt if you will). It would make sense to put all the concert venues on the other side of the complex away from the park and open up the current stadium space for either more park expansion or a new service center and then tear the old one down and expand the park there as well.

I go to college in the area so i know what ur talking, they are re-doing a lot of the roads in hershey right now, and they improved the stoplight and intersection between Cocoa Ave and Chocolates Ave, i dont know if this is related to the expansion but it does help with traffic.

Also, What are you opinions are Hershey putting a record breaking attraction in the expansion area, as well as a drop tower and/or a monorail expansion?

I don't know. But have you noticed that a lot of major rides such as rollercoasters are normally placed what is or at one time was easily accessible from the outside of the park. I am 98% sure this is so they would have no problem getting track and other parts to the site. I noticed this when I started thinking about the location of Hershey's coasters. Also that may be why they haven't rerouted the road and expanded yet. ( easier access to SKYRUSH site)

Maybe this might be an answer towards the park looking at possibly expanding the monorail system:

http://allamericanthrills.freeforumsblogs.com/t88-hersheypark-purchases-six-flags-magic-mountain-s-old-metro-trains

Also, Skyrush (as well as the new Sunken Gardens) could indeed be the cornerstone for the beginning of expansion out into the old golf course. Just tear down the remaining pavilion at what was Creekside Catering, move Park Blvd, and there you go.

Re: Hersheypark Old Golf Course Expansion Plan

Maybe. All they would need to do is get dimensions of the existing track and find a manufacture that will make it for them. If they really wanted to expand the monorail over there they could open that part and start using it before the road is moved. By using the monorail as transportation. If they were that desperate for space.

I do hope to see the monorail expanded over there once they open that area up. Mostly b/c if you are in the midway America end of the park I would be easier than fighting your way all the way over there

Intamin makes a monorail beam similar to ours, so it's highly possible. Also, the tires for the trains were hard to come by until recently when they were able to strike up a deal with a manufacturer that makes those very tires, thus eliminating that problem. I just couldn't see them buying all of Magic Mountain's trains just to sit there for spare parts - it would make sense to put two of them back into use and use the third for parts. They wouldn't need to expand the system out into the golf course but maybe out towards Midway and the Boardwalk. Having an expanded monorail system out there would aleviate the walking problem from the golf course to those areas.

What theme do you think the new area will have or do you think it may partially be an expansion of comet hallow?

I believe if/ when they expand, there will be one or two more sections added to the park, i pretty sure comet hallow is staying as is.

Re: Hersheypark Old Golf Course Expansion Plan

Post by warfelg on 2012-03-01, 16:35

It would be smart for them to move the park into the old golf course. However come comments from these two pages for far:

Someone mentioned expanding here and towards the stadium. That would be incredibly hard for multiple reasons. (1) That would take a massive amount of new rides (2) For all the space they add to the park they need to expand the parking lot by a certain number of spots. Without a parking garage they simply don't have the space.

Moving a road takes about 3-6 years to complete from preliminary studies, land studies, fund approval, public approval, and finally construction. They could skip a few of those steps if Hersheypark were able to own the road and declare it a private access non-public road. But then maintenance and liability falls on them.

Much of the same problems the plague the road plagues the speed of the expansion happening. Re-zoning, water studies, ect. all need to be filed. Then they need to do construction on a parking lot, find a place for all the run off water. Develop rides, paths, clear the land and re-landscape.

Finally it would likely cost, everything included, $500-$750 million at least.

All of that said, it's worth it for the long term success of Hersheypark. With these changes the entrance would be centered again, with Founder Circle and Comet Hollow as the featured areas. The expansion could give them a nice place for a secondary entrance/exit for people parked out by the Giant Center.

I suspect it would start as a slow expansion at first with a few flat rides and various thrill rides (no coasters). Then with a coaster (or maybe two) we could get the giant expansion.

All in all I think that the topography of the area would lead to a great terrain coaster, a la Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce. Whether it be steel or wood I think something the plays with the natural landscape and terrain would be a great addition to the other coasters we already have.

Yes but i am pretty sure this has been in the planning phase for years so this should be getting close if not already in the construction phase. Also I wouldn't expect or think that they would to develop the would the whole area at once or all one area

I'm not sure at what point of the plan that Derry Township and Hersheypark are at with the road. It wouldn't be too hard to find out and it could give a clue as to a time frame to when construction on an expansion would happen. I was just reflecting the typical timeline it takes for a project like that to happen. I'm at the very beginning stages of a road relocation, been at it 6 months and still working on the initial documents.

Also I wouldn't expect or think that they would to develop the would the whole area at once or all one area

Not sure what you meant but if your saying that you don't expect them to develop the whole area at once I agree. I think the type of development that happened with Midway would happen to any new area. A thrill ride/coaster at the edges of the new theme area, put some new flats and pull some stuff out of storage. Leave plenty of open space and slowly fill it in as to not overload the budget in a single year.

I think it's clear that the area will be developed over time, and certainly could be used for a coaster's layout in the mean time. Looking at the opening dates over the last 20 years for Hershey's coasters, I was really surprised at the pace they've built them. We can assume Skyrush will be an unparallelled success, and think the next real big coaster addition will be within the next four years, which could coincide with the expansion. Fun to watch no doubt.

I'd say that Skyrush could possibly be the start out in that direction. Having that new path cutting through there could be extended out that way once Park Blvd is moved.
